Colour trend update.

This February I’ve attended two trade fairs for the Interiors industry. Geometric design and bold colours continue to trend strongly especially with accessories and rugs.

Orchard was the Pantone 2014 colour of the year and suppliers have reacted quickly with an abundance of orchid coloured products.

Warmth underfoot as winter approaches

Chevrons are the latest in rug fashions.
Colourful rugs can give an instant style update.

Through my bank of quality rug suppliers I can select wonderful rug choices to be delivered in a matter of days, however sometimes custom rugs are the best way forward.

Why custom?  Apart from the appeal of having a unique design in almost any colour the most important reason I use custom rugs is that I can tailor the sizing to fit the room or furniture arrangement.  Stairs, hallways (particularly when turning corners) and very large family rooms can be perfectly detailed with a custom rug.  I split custom rug types into two main categories:

Firstly there is natural flooring, which are your natural sisal, coir and seagrass products etc.  (pictured left) These rugs come in a wide variety of colours and patterns and can be edged with fabric or leather.

Natural flooring can also be provided as wall to wall carpets.  I am yet to see true natural sisal products in carpet stores in Canberra but do have full sampling in my studio.

Secondly there are custom wool rugs which often feature highlights in art silk.  (pictured right) There are hundreds of wool and art silk colours to choose from and pattern design is only limited to one's imagination.

Custom wool rugs can take up to 16 weeks to manufacture and deliver, so for warmth underfoot this winter now is the time to take action.

Either type of custom rug can be source in a variety of qualities and for domestic or commercial applications.

Journey Home’s rug advisory service includes a home visit to discuss your functional and aesthetic requirements, view examples of rug costs, work out the optimal size for your room and whether you need custom. At our studio we source or design up to two rugs which are presented for your approval prior to purchase.

Speciality rugs such as hooked, plaid, braided, quality outdoor rugs are some of the many options up our sleeve for your rug solution.

Touching Base

It's been a while, a busy 7 months in fact, during this time I have finished my stage one renovations, opened up the house for public viewing to raise money for Hartley Life Care, officially launching Journey Home Interior Design, no minor task by the way,  got myself a new website all whilst putting a lot of time and effort into client projects.  Did I mention I study too.   The result is that blogging had to give way for a while.

I'd love for you visit  Journey Home Interior Design's new website, especially my latest portfolio additions.    If you like what you see, please tell someone.

Forgotton Classics

One of the things I like to do when designing is to bring back past classics.
At long last venetian blinds with wide tape (usually a gross grain ribbon) are now available again in a variety of colour combinations.

I had always admired them in my grandmothers 1950's kitchen and pictured above they are a lovely compliment to Svetlana Silverman's English style kitchen.  When used with wide blades they make a stylish and affordable alternative to plantation shutters.   I look forward to using them in my projects, in fact I will be running the idea by a client this week.

Budget break down on an Art Decor Inspired Bedroom

 Art Deco Inspired Bedroom Suite
When clients ask for "Classic Modern" the above is a style that comes to mind.

To take these stylish transitional pieces from this studio photograph to a stunning real life master bedroom I would choose a warmer tone for timber or carpet flooring and use a larger rug.

Items pictured above are:
  • Stacked chest of drawers with textured fronts and loop handles.
  • Bedside cabinets with textured fronts and loop handles.
  • Queen size upholstered bed head in textured duck egg blue & sage fabric
  • Carver chair
  • Rug -which I recommend in the larger size of 243 x 305cm
  • Solid crystal based lamps
  • Empire style Swarovski Crystal Austrian Chandelier - this piece is one of a kind in Australia.

  • Other items I would recommend to complete this setting are:

    •  This elegant bed end stool (space permitting) which would be upholstered in a luxurious feeling fabric

    • Beaded Mirror

    • Decadent bed linen

Queen size quilted duvet and pillow case set +
Queen size sheets and pillow case set with silver grey embroidery.

    • A very plush queen size ensemble at the top end of commercial bedding featuring a 10 year warranty and all the creature comforts.

    • Window furnishings - For this setting I would specify both sheer and block out curtains in a simple elegant style like this...
Beautifully made curtains are an essential Bedroom component.

Windsor Chairs and Modern Family Dining

The room image in Journey Home's recent advertisement in the Reid Residents Association newsletter didn't print too well, so I am posting the picture here on the blog.

This transitional family dining room, caters to today's modern lifestyle and fashionable elements using traditional design elements.  In fact I would like to create our own family dining room with similar architectural design features and Windsor chairs.

    More about Windsor Chairs

Originally of English design, they were evolved by furniture makers in the early years of European settlement of the USA and are still a design staple for American designers today.  Black was a popular choice both then and now.  A well made Windsor chair is highly comfortable and will last for generations.

Windsor Chairs are again highly fashionable in the traditional genre of design so about two years ago  I developed two lines of Windsor chairs for my old furniture manufacturing business.   They are manufactured using traditional hand made techniques and feature comfortable contoured seats.

Journey Home can supply them with both the square and round design, either with or without arms. A selection of finishes is available including custom painting in bright colours.
